LCD screens or displays have a layer that protects them from adverse weather conditions. This optical layer is laminated to the LCD through a process called optical bonding.
The optical layer that is added to the LCD can either be a touch-screen or a cover glass. When this extra layer is laminated on the LCD, chances are high that an air gap is formed between the LCD and the layer. This air gap is carefully filled with the help adhesives like urethane or silicon.
After the adhesive is inserted between the layer and the LCD, it is kept idle for a while for curing. When the gel gets solidified, the curing is completed and the LCD is ready and resistant to the weather conditions.
Purpose Of Optical Bonding
Without optical coating, the LCD is vulnerable. So the primary purpose behind optically bonding an LCD is to make it resistant to wear and tear. The default plastic surfaces that LCDs come with are not weatherproof. This means your LCD can get damaged at any time.
Protection From Moisture And Dust
Optically coated LCD can easily resist dust and moisture because after the bonding, the gap between the LCD and the lamination is properly filled with adhesive material. The bonding does not spoil the display. LCDs that come with optical bonding will fetch dust and condensation fast. This will eventually result in the display getting unreadable.
Protection From Shock And Shake
LCDs are used in different places, not just in homes in stable condition. They are used in vehicles, military applications, etc. LCDs used in unstable places need to be optically bonded in order to resist shock and shake.
Does Bonding Affect The Temperature Range Of Display?
In the early stages of the development of optical LCD bonding, there were many issues with the display due to the changes or variations in the temperature range. These types of issues were effectively addressed after modern bonding methods were adopted.
In the current scenario, the bonding does not affect the display because of the improved solutions used in the bonding process. In modern LCDs, the bonding does not have any effect on the components of the LCD. It only affects the surface of the display.
